Museum Monday - giraffes and penguins and alligators - oh my!

Luckily the only museum open on Monday was one all of us were eager to visit, the California Academy of Sciences. While we were disappointed that the rain forest was closed for cleaning (yes, they have a rain forest inside the museum), it was more than made up for by the phenomenal aquarium.

In addition to great fish on display, there was an interactive touch and feel tank where Sadie got a kick out of petting starfish and sea urchin.

She got really mad when we tried to leave, even with promises of white alligators (yes, they have a famous albino alligator but I don't have a picture).

These eels looked like something out of a video game but were entirely real.

Back upstairs in the natural history part of the museum (not nearly as extensive as the ones we're used to in NYC and Boston, but who's counting?) Sadie got friendly with the turtle statue (I'm sure with no encouragement from Aunt Lisa).

Our cafeteria table (where they only serve "slow food" out of row upon row of Le Creuset pots, oh so good) overlooked this display. When it caught Sadie's eye, she exclaimed, "Earf, earf!" and insisted on pausing lunch so she could try and climb into the display to touch the Earth.

Next up was the tiny habitat for the Madagascar penguins (real ones). There was one frisky feller who would dive down in the water and follow anything shiny and dangling against the glass - so you could lead him around and "play" with him.

Here Sadie is showing the mommy and daddy giraffes to her Ernie doll in hand.

The last stop in the museum was a toddler discovery area, which has lots of toys and play structures in a smaller, softer environment. Sadie loves loves loves her duplos so she took right away to this arctic-themed set. We built bathtubs for the penguins (I don't know why, but all of our duplo playing involves building bathtubs for her people).

And with that we went home and took a good long nap.
